Much like fear – it is an uncomfortable feeling that we have when we are faced with tricky situations. Sometimes those situations are real, like a sports match or an exam. We can create those situations in our mind, like worrying about things that ‘may or may not’ happen in future. The experience of anxiety is our body’s way of preparing us to manage those difficult situations. While anxiety can help us perform better by helping us feel alert and motivated. It sometimes can get so full on that it gets in the way of daily life – this is when anxiety becomes a problem.
Everyone can experience anxiety differently, there are some common signs and symptoms of anxiety:
- A racing heart.
- Faster breathing.
- Feeling tense or having aches (especially neck, shoulders and back).
- Sweating or feeling dizzy shaking ‘butterflies’ or feeling sick in the stomach.
- Being unable to relax.
- Avoiding places or people, like school or parties spending less time with friends and family.
- Having trouble concentrating and paying attention.
- Feeling annoyed, irritated or restless.
There are a range of strategies you can try to manage your anxiety. What works is different for everyone, and it can take time to find the strategies that work best for you. But remember, if your anxiety is proving difficult to manage seek support from a professional.
When you’re anxious, your breathing becomes faster and shallower. Try deliberately slowing down your breathing. Count to three as you breathe in slowly – then count to three as you breathe out slowly.
Find a quiet location. Close your eyes and slowly tense and then relax each of your muscle groups from your toes to your head. Hold the tension for three seconds and then release quickly. This can help reduce the feelings of muscle tension that often comes with anxiety.
Talking with others who also experience anxiety – or are going through something similar – can help you feel less alone.
Remember that you are not your anxiety. Therefore it doesn’t mean you are weak or inferior. You have a mental health condition. It’s called anxiety. One of the best ways to treat it is hypnosis and hypnotherapy. We have helped so many people in the past suffering from anxiety, panic attacks, and stress related conditions.
